In our case 6" would not leave enough clearance at the top. The alternative door company that we had come & look, said that in our situation a 4" x 26" transom, was better than no transom, but they normally recommend a minimum of 6". His comment was that most people don't use their transoms because they "never stay open properly". Our contractor recommended an alternative glass door fabricator who suggested we skip the transom altogether, and just leave the door open after our shower, to let steam escape. Ugh - don't get me started on how upsetting that was - it was $7,000 to tile this shower!!! I can't afford to rip it out just to get rid of the bulkhead and door frame When I asked, he just said "that's how they do it" Plus, added a marble jamb surround instead of leaving the opening flush to the wall. I have NO IDEA why they put the bulkhead back. I thought I was clear that we were getting a frameless door, and while we could not increase the square footage of the shower, were were going to make it look bigger by eliminating the bulkhead. Shower is complete - only thing missing is the door.Īnd yes, we explained to the contractor that we needed a transom due to the steam shower. it is so upsetting, because this could have been easily avoided, but I didn't catch it in time, as we were also dealing with many many other details in our large scale reno. I don t know WHAT our contractor was thinking. I am really upset about the bulhead & extra framing. My husband & myself are not overly tall, and we plan on staying in this house for a long time, so I *think* the height will be OK, but I do realize it's kinda short. My 2nd question is, should we be concerned about such a short door. My 1st question is - is a 4" H x 26" W transom going to be large enough to allow steam to escape. Now - this includes a sill, which 99% of the time is stepped OVER, not ON, so if we step OVER the sill, there is plenty of headroom. The minimum req'd height for a transom, according to the glass door supplier is 4", leaving us with a door height of just over about 69" Our contractor framed in our shower with a bulkhead on the ceiling and a further "frame" for the door opening, resulting in a doorway height of only 73 3/4 ". So, I am in a bit of a pickle regarding my steam shower. Just stumbled across this forum while googling transoms for steam shower doors.
